Speaking for Christ Jesus,

"Welcome!"

St. Mark's is a Christian community
which was founded in the then center of the burned Capital 1866, moved later to the new center, and in 1922 moved out to the then "West End," which is today, geographically,  the center of Richmond, Virginia. We are all active members of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. We are

Urban
Diverse
Mission-oriented
Eucharistically-centered.

We are a Parish church
St. Mark's is in reality but a part (hence the word "Parish") of The Church of Virginia. With our sister parishes we are one Flock under one Shepherd (Latin: Pastor), who has "oversight" of the Church. In Greek, one who "over-sees" is an episcopos, or in Old English, biscop. At present we have

Three bishops:
Peter Lee the Diocesan, David Jones, his Suffragan or helper, and Co-adjutor Shannon Johnston who will be Diocesan when Bishop Lee retires. All of our Bishops are in union and communion with other Bishops who with their People are called The Episcopal Church.

Who was St. Mark?
Our church is named for our John Mark, an early missionary, church leader and the author of the second Gospel. Mark was the son of Mary in whose house the Jerusalem believers met to pray when Peter was imprisoned by Herod Agrippa I (Acts 12:12). Mark served as a companion to Paul and Barnabas on their missionary journeys and was referred to by Peter as his "son." Paul called him a "useful helper" (2 Tim 4:11) and so we seek to be in our community today. Thank you for visiting with us and please let us know how we may be of help to you.
